Big Guns Lurking Dangerously after Scorching Opener at Wentworth.

Big Guns Lurking Dangerously after Scorching Opener at Wentworth.
25/05/2012

Thousands flocked to a gloriously sunny Wentworth Club to witness a superb showing from the European Tour's elite golfers. The early show was stolen by Irishman Peter Lawrie and Scotsman David Drysdale, both carding 66s within an hour of each other in the midday sun.

However, several of the world's best golfers are looming large, within touching distance of the leaders. Namely, the much fancied Justin Rose, who finished just a single shot off the pace with a near flawless 67.

This year's Championship is set up to be the best yet, with just two shots separating the top-20. Stellar names within that group include Alvaro Quiros (-5), defending champion Luke Donald and Ernie Else (both -4).

Elsewhere, world-number-one Rory McIlroy slumped to an uncharacteristically poor 74, that included a double-bogey at the par-4 16th. The US Open champion will have to make the most of another favourable forecast tomorrow if he's to see the weekend.

This year's BMW PGA Championship is once again set-up to be a scorcher, both on and off the course. And, with the field so tightly packed, it's anyones.
