To calculate the cost of charging your car at home you can take the capacity of your vehicle’s battery (in kWh) and multiply by the electricity cost of your supplier (in pence per kWh) e.g. the battery capacity of the BMW i4 eDrive40 is approximately 80 kWh, so to charge at home from 0-100% and get up to 365^[1] miles of range, it would cost approximately £27. By switching to a smart tariff, designed specifically for EV drivers you could reduce this even further.

In your vehicle menu, you can easily and conveniently set your charge target to 80 percent and do not have to worry about anything else. A charging target of 80 percent covers all your daily driving distances. If you need more range, you can simply set a higher charging target.

The charging time depends on the electrical connection: electric cars and plug-in hybrids can indeed be charged at a domestic socket outlet, but charging takes longer due to the lower charging power. Charging with a wallbox at home with up to 22 kW, depending on the car, is faster, safer, and more convenient.

Alternating current (AC) puts less load on the battery, ensuring that it has a longer service life. However, if time is of the essence when you are travelling, you can also charge with direct current (DC) at a fast-charging station and gain plenty of range for your electric cars in a very short time.

Charging at home can be achieved by using a regular 3-pin socket and a standard BMW charging cable such as the standard BMW Flexible Charging Cable, offering the convenience of charging your car from the moment you take delivery.
