THE BMW X5 PROTECTION VR6.
WHAT IS PROTECTED.
Certification
All BMW Protection Vehicles are subjected to a comprehensive testing regime and are officially certified on compliance according to the internationally recognised ballistic guidelines for ‘Bullet Resistant Vehicles’ (VPAM BRV 2009 & ERV 2010, Fassung 2). So you can be confident that you are getting the best possible protection.
Protection level
Experience protection on a new level – with the BMW X5 Protection VR6. The armouring of the passenger cell is made out of high-strength steel parts with an armoured boot divider and passenger cell as standard. The external underbody armour made out of aluminium shields protect against shock waves and splinter effects, which can be optionally strengthened with resistant fabrics.
Passenger cell
Latest protection technology, made by BMW: Armour that is perfectely fitted to the standard model’s body shell. Our aspiration is of the highest diligence when it comes to overlapping armour in sensitive areas like door joints, chinks or at the transitions of doors and windows. The abbreviation "VR6“ ("Vehicle Resistance“), that is part of the model’s name BMW X5 Protection VR6, represents the resistance class, that the special protection vehicle is certified with (VPAM BRV 2009, Edition 2 in the current version). Civil protection vehicles are classified in different resistance classes, ranging from VR1 to VR10. Additonally, this vehicle is certified according to the VPAM ERV 2010, Edition 2 guidelines.
Furthermore, the vehicle includes the so called “Post-Blast-Protection”. This means that all armoured window panes are protected from secondary attacks. The window panes remain in their position when subjected to explosives. No openings arise between glass and body, that could be used as further points of attack. On top, the Self-Sealing Fuel Tank, that reseals itself after damage, and Underbody Armouring ensure that you’re protected all around.
Interior
The interior of the BMW X5 Protection VR6 offers intuitive ease of use and maximum comfort. A raised seating position, a driver-focused cockpit with a large BMW Curved Display and the innovative iDrive system.
The BMW X5 Protection VR6 provides you with multiple design possibilities, including a number of options from the BMW Individual range.
The BMW Live Cockpit Plus with BMW Curved Display includes a high-quality display network. It combines a fully digital 12.3" instrument panel with a 14.9" control display that can be operated by touch.
The automatic air conditioning with 4-zone control offers individual air conditioning on the front seats and on the left and right seats in the rear. A nanoparticle filter improves the air quality for both fresh air and recirculating air. The rear passengers can adjust their own climate individually via a separate controller
The optional comfort seats for driver and front passenger can be electrically adjusted in a variety of ways to provide you with the perfect seating position.
The optional active seat ventilation (only available in conjunction with comfort seats) in the front of the vehicle provides cool and pleasant seat temperatures, resulting in a more comfortable driving experience.
The M Leather steering wheel includes multifunction buttons and an integrated driver-side airbag within the three-spoke design. With a steering wheel rim in leather 'Walknappa' black with stitching in sporty M colours and contoured thumb rests, it provides a direct, athletic steering experience.
The BMW X5 Protecion VR6 offers high seating comfort for up to four passengers, incuding generous leg space. The rear divider offers a comfortable sense of space, without compromising the safety.
Armour
The security glazing in the BMW X5 Protection VR6 is made of a security glass laminate. The polycarbonate coating on the inside prevents spalling.
BMW uses moulded parts in the BMW X5 Protection VR6 which precisely follow the contours of the standard model. This way, all the normal airbags can be incorporated, without the cabin feeling any less spacious.
The edges of the doors, the sections where windows meet the frames, and the sections between body panels are reinforced with steel armour.
Chassis and electronics
The electronic driver aids and suspension settings have been modified to ensure optimum driving dynamics with the extra weight of the armour.
Safety fuel tank
The Self-Sealing Fuel Tank is able to reseal itself if damaged and prevents the leaking of fuel.
Multi-Layered Safety Glass
Drivers and passengers of the BMW X5 Protection VR6 are protected by a 30 mm multi-layered safety glass, coated with a polycarbonate splinter protection layer.
Additional floor and roof armouring
The BMW X5 Protection VR6 has a wealth of standard equipment. For example, the underbody splinter protection and ballistic protection are both standard. Also available is the underbody splinter guard offered as optional equipment, as well as an armoured roof made of safety steel and fibre composite materials, also offered as optional equipment.

Performance data of petrol engines apply to vehicles using RON 98 fuel. Fuel consumption data apply to vehicles using reference fuels in accordance with EU Regulation 715/2007. Unleaded RON 91 and higher with a maximum ethanol content of 10% (E10) may also be used. BMW recommends RON 95 fuel. For high-performance automobiles, BMW recommends RON 98 fuel.
Official data for fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, power consumption and electric range was determined in accordance with the prescribed measuring procedure and corresponds to European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the applicable version. For ranges, data determined as per WLTP takes into account any optional equipment (available on the German market in this case). For vehicles that have been newly type approved since 1 January 2021, only the official data according to WLTP exists. In addition, NEDC values are deleted from the certificates of conformity as of 1 January 2023 by EC regulation 2022/195.
